Treasury scan, benchmark or diagnostic: which does your company need?
"Treasury health check", "treasury scan", "treasury assessment", "treasury benchmark" and "treasury diagnostic" are often used interchangeably. They are not the same. This guide sets out what each typically involves, so a CFO can choose the right starting point.
Treasury scan or health check
- What it is
- A short review of treasury processes, usually led by a consultant over one to five days, often on site.
- Typical output
- A summary of findings and observations.
- Best suited to
- Companies that want a quick outside opinion on a specific concern.
Treasury benchmark
- What it is
- A comparison of your treasury function against peers or industry practice, typically expressed as a maturity score.
- Typical output
- A maturity position relative to a peer group.
- Best suited to
- Treasurers who need to show the board where the function stands.
Treasury diagnostic
- What it is
- A structured, quantified assessment across defined treasury domains, combining maturity scoring, benchmarks and estimated financial impact.
- Typical output
- A board-ready report with estimated value at stake and Management Considerations.
- Best suited to
- CFOs who need an independent, evidence-based baseline before deciding on change.
Questions to ask before choosing
- Is the provider independent of banks, software vendors and implementation work?
- Is the fee fixed, or does it depend on days spent?
- Will the result quantify estimated financial impact, or only describe processes?
- How long until a board-ready result is available?
- Does the process require access to bank accounts or ERP systems?
How the Global Treasury Diagnostic fits
The Global Treasury Diagnostic (GTD) is an independent treasury diagnostic for European mid-market companies: 107 structured questions across up to 7 treasury domains, deterministic scoring, mid-market benchmarks and estimated financial impact. It is delivered as a board-ready report in 10 business days. GTD is diagnostic only — no implementation, and no connection to bank accounts or ERP systems.
